Gatwick Car & Van Rental strive to be knowledgeable on the latest trends and advancements within our industry. The growing interest in electric cars is picking up momentum at an astounding rate, and the future of these environmentally friendly vehicles is something that could impact, and indeed expand, our current fleet of 300 cars.
The Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has reported a 65% increase in the sales of electric cars in comparison to last year’s figures, and this statistic looks only set to increase over the next few years. Sales saw their peak in March 2015, with 6,000 electric cars registered in that month alone, increasing the total number of electric vehicles registered in the UK to 40,000 vehicles. The huge surge in sales could be due to the major car manufacturers getting involved, with the 10 best-selling car brands in the UK now offering an electric car as part of their range. Gone are the days of small, boxy electric cars, instead replaced by a variety of sleek and stylish car designs.
Government grants are available to reduce the initial cost of purchasing an electric car. The Plug-in Vehicle Grant is automatically deducted from the retail price and subsidises:

As a result of government investment, there are now over 8,400 electrical vehicle charging stations across the United Kingdom, some of which can recharge a battery 80% of the way in just 20 minutes. These efforts mean it is now easier than ever to travel long distances unhindered in an electric car.
Furthermore, the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme offers electric vehicle owners up to £700 to help fund the installation of a home charge point.
Travelling 100 miles in an electric car will cost just £2 to £3. To travel the same distance in a petrol car will cost you somewhere in the region of £12 to £18. This makes electric vehicles six times cheaper than travelling in a standard vehicle.
In a bid to increase the number of electric vehicle users, there are also several exemptions and potential savings to make running an electric car considerably cheaper:
